ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores the UK borderscapes from the perspective of the policies that shape them, those who draw these policies, and those who operationalise them. It analyses the implications of the Spouse Visa’s probationary period on women’s safety. The book shows how from being highly debated, border externalisation became a common practice in the EU, as well as in other countries such as the United States of America (USA), Australia, and Israel. It investigates the imaginaries of individuals who have immigrated to the UK. The book provides another perspective on tension between imaginaries and experiences of the UK border by focusing on the case of Vietnamese nationals who have migrated to the UK or intend to make the journey. It also analyses the role of objects in debordering and rebordering processes.
