ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book focuses on the legal and operational implementation of the border. It explores the UK borderscape along different paths. The book provides historical examination of the border system which shows that current asylum and immigration policies are deeply rooted in the UK’s colonialist history and are inherently racist. It shows how reforms achieved within a sector can be constrained to small changes that do not fundamentally change the logic of the system. By bringing together different studies and the perspective of both academics and civil society practitioners, the book presents a collective picture of the UK borderscape that highlights the tensions between the practices and imaginaries that form it. It also shows that the border as a practice and as an imaginary is not as strong as it might want to be.
