ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the origins of geography; identify contributions of geographers to the fields of disasters and terrorism. It discusses professional roles of geographers within disaster management. The chapter considers challenges within the field; and spotlight the future growth of the discipline within the emergency management and homeland security context. The chapter also introduces how the profession of geography informs modern-day management of disasters and terrorism as well as the fields of emergency management and homeland security. Just as geographers working within emergency management are influenced by the four traditions of geography, those working within counter-terrorism are also guided/influenced by this foundational knowledge. In order to recognize the role of geography in managing disasters and terrorism, the next section explains the origins of hazards geography as related to emergency management and homeland security.
