Mexican American Combatants in the Civil War Press

This chapter explores representations of Mexican American and Tejano Union soldiers in the Civil War press, especially but not only in newspapers of the Southwest. It finds that coverage often presented contradictory representations of the soldiers and their contributions, delaying recognition of their battlefield accomplishments for generations. The chapter examines reporting on Mexican American soldiers in their major areas of service, New Mexico, California, and Texas.
