Picturing Union Soldiers of the Civil War in the Illustrated Press

This chapter explores how images of the common soldier in the illustrated press conveyed experiences in camp and on the battlefield, how they depicted suffering and death, and how they shaped the nation's memory of its soldiers and veterans through a combination of realism and myth.
