ABSTRACT

In this chapter, María Dolores Palomo Infante examines the role played by local political institutions in managing these problems and illuminates the daily reality of the peoples who inhabit the region. She addresses some difficulties inherent to the region: territorial, resources, cross-border mobility, refugees, undocumented migration, trade, and contraband issues. She also studies the role of local institutions—who are closer to the border's inhabitants, dynamics, and issues—in managing and solving these problems.
