ABSTRACT

Julián Castro-Rea and Kyle Beattie show how the United States is the country in the Americas where not only the political right and conservatism have developed superior strength and diversity but is also the hub of propagation of right-wing ideas throughout the hemisphere and of support to movements that embody them. This trend achieved its pinnacle during Donald J. Trump's presidency (2017–2021). The chapter first presents a cultural and historical overview, as a background to explain why the United States provided such a fertile ground for the growth of right-wing and conservative ideas; before exploring their projection to the rest of the Americas on the back of money, foreign policy, military interventions, soft power, and overall organisational support.
