ABSTRACT

In the writings of the German traveller, Australian men did not fare as favourably as women. Many writers felt that a rough manner and general laziness were not necessarily a sign of independence. Emanuel Korff and Albert Daiber were both in Australia in the late 1890s, and their opinions about the Australian male could not have been more different. A certain energetic incivility and a raw egoism are the common Australian male characteristics. Everywhere one finds a sloppy appearance and a contempt for common courtesies. Mutual greetings are unknown. Good acquaintances talk to each other in the crudest fashion. Everything is justified in Australia if it leads to success. The memory of ‘down’ is very short once you are ‘up’ again. A short while ago Mr Kingston, Premier of South Australia, fought the richest grazier in the State with riding whips in the market square.
