ABSTRACT

Since 2000, African telecommunications industries have witnessed several changes such as the implementation of market liberalization reform agenda and breaking of the state monopoly. These changes have significantly altered market structure from what it was prior to 2000, and made the continent’s telecommunications markets one of the booming and fastest-growing regional markets in the world. Against this backdrop of the growing evolution of African telecommunications industries, this chapter provides a case study analysis of Nigerian mobile wireless sector to illustrate the current ownership and market trends in the African telecommunication industries. The chapter discusses current market structure, key market players and patterns of ownership in the Nigerian telecommunications industry in the last decade (2011–2021). The key question that the chapter attempts to answer is: is there a concentration trend in the sector?
