ABSTRACT

The compatibility of Holistic Expressive Play Therapy (HEPT) to the neurobiological assumptions of Polyvagal theory are examined, as well as the applications of both to children who struggle with depression and dissociation. Numerous HEPT concepts were identified as compatible with Polyvagal theory. Both acknowledge the human capacity for adaptability or neuroplasticity throughout the lifespan. Each acknowledges basal responses are often elicited prior to consciousness, supporting the concept of non-cognitive processes as part of treating trauma. Further, each addresses relational attachment and safety through social engagement as an essential element of healing and health. Last, both view patterned and repetitive play as a co-regulatory process, crucial to promoting healing and healthy development. These common elements suggest that effective play therapy treatment models are likely compatible with immerging neuroscientific principles.
