ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an analytic map of the state of research in economic sociology in Europe. It combines a conceptual analysis and an empirical overview of significant publications. First, we explain the conceptual categories that capture the theoretical depth of terms commonly used by this speciality. Second, we report on an extensive bibliometric search of the literature published in the Web of Science (WOS). We selected a set of 1177 publications. The analysis focuses on an overview of research by making visible topics, geographical distributions, journals, authors and the main influential works. Because of their usefulness to identify the usage of a constellation of concepts and the significant research communities representing intellectual building blocks, we have used keyword co-occurrence and co-citation analysis. The results provide insights into the relation of economic sociology with core theoretical notions, especially those based on institutions and networks. It also helps to contrast empirically the differences and interconnections of European economic sociology vis-à-vis the contributions from the United States and other parts of the world.
