ABSTRACT
Henry Louis Vivian Derozio was the first Indian poet to write in English. Creating the first digital edition of Derozio’s major works presents us with the opportunity to revisit his work for its local references to both Bengal and Calcutta, where he lived and taught, and for the global imaginative geography of his poetry. As is well known, Derozio wrote in dialogue with British Romantic writers such as Thomas Moore and Lord Byron. British Romantic writers were themselves engaged in a Global project, with poetry set in Greece, Turkey, and other versions of the “Orient.” How did Derozio repurpose the global scope of Romantic Orientalism for his own, local ends? And how can we use digital tools, including visualizations and maps, to reinscribe Romantic poetry as a globalized project?
