ABSTRACT

Graphic novels in India are a comparatively recent phenomenon and have gained popularity in the recent years. It is novel taken on India’s visual storytelling tradition and has gained global acclaim. Domestic publishing houses use the tools provided by technology and the internet has focused on publishing and propagating Indigenous comics and graphic novels. Indian graphic novels are generally written in English and read by a small section of the population, who are the urban, educated, and presumably elite lot. Although Indian graphic novelists are now trying to reach a larger readership on a global scale. The advances in technology and effective use of the internet facilitate graphic novelists to connect with each other and with their readers across the globe. Indian graphic novelists consider their work as a work of art rather than for mere entertainment and have a socio-cultural and sometimes a political message or theme in them. Indian graphic narratives are created, because the author/artist has something to say and wants to appeal to a different kind of audience. This chapter will discuss how Indian graphic novels have breathed new life into Indian writing in English and managed to capture global attention via the cultural stories and traditional Indigenous forms of art. Although written in English, they are socially and culturally seeped into Indian contexts. These have gathered global and domestic praise while exploring social, cultural, and political issues of our homeland in a new way and possibly suggesting solutions.
