ABSTRACT

The DH body of knowledge produced in the last decade rightfully critiques how technology dictates our social life and questions the power structures that guide it. This chapter extends that work to the multilingual literature of India, the socio-cultural realities of language and identity-making, its reading culture, how real-world linguistic unities and divisions play out online, and how existing classification systems are inadequate to capture these complexities. Towards that, it looks at the origin, mission, and setup of Purple Pencil Project, an Indian literary venture that focuses on bringing pluralistic Indian fiction under the same spotlight that Indian English fiction has dominated over the last few decades. The chapter, part overview, part background, and part methodology, covers the questions of how literary discovery online is hegemonic, how Purple Pencil Project is working towards a democratic platform, and the need of assessment for such a project.
