ABSTRACT

The Innovative Impact adult day program for autistic adults buzzed with activity as program associates prepared for their day of vocational training and learning to use public transportation. Among them was Karl Stevens, director of the program and a passionate advocate for providing effective and equitable training for autistic adults. As he made his way through the busy halls, Karl couldn’t help but notice the unease and anxiety etched on the faces of some of the program associates. He knew all too well the struggles that came with using public transportation and the barriers it posed for autistic people.
