ABSTRACT

Antarctica, Terra Incognita, is a site of speculation, exploration, scientific investigation, and political territorialization. As a designated ‘International Zone’ it is a place of collaboration as well as contestation. It is also a destination for contemporary artists and writers many of whom have undertaken residencies through programmes run by British, American, Australian, and New Zealand government organizations. Through reference to work by selected artists this paper comments on the Antarctic as unknown space and reflects on the contemporary currency of the sublime.
