Published in Source in 2002, this brief article reflects on the operations of photographs, indexicality, the impact of the digital, the fluidity of visual meaning and the limitations of theory in its task of contextualizing and analyzing photographic practices, historically and now. Twenty years later it points to then pivotal moments in thinking about photography.
