ABSTRACT

The chapter considers the relevance of postcolonial theory for understanding research ethics in comparative and international education (CIE). An understanding of postcolonial theory is outlined, which forms a basis for setting out a postcolonial research ethics in CIE. We argue that postcolonial theory makes a distinctive contribution to understanding of research ethics in CIE by providing a critique of dominant approaches; an understanding of the postcolonial condition in education as a context for research ethics; an appreciation of postcolonial research ethics as emancipatory; and a view of postcolonial research ethics as being situated and dialogic in nature.
