ABSTRACT

This study compared two groups of beginner learners of French who received audio-visual perceptual training sessions on French liaisons (i.e., resyllabification process) with or without gesture. In the Gesture condition, the speaker moved her hand sideways in a curved fashion (i.e., ‿) to highlight the liaisons, whereas she remained still in the Non-Gesture condition. In both conditions, participants repeated the stimuli after the speaker. Results showed that the gain in production accuracy of French liaisons from pre- to post-test was significantly higher for the participants in the Gesture group than those in the Non-Gesture group.
