ABSTRACT

Rödlach reflects in this chapter on his long-term engagement with the Karenni, a refugee community that originates from Myanmar and has resettled in Omaha, Nebraska, in the United States. He developed a relationship with this community during formal research as well as at social, cultural, and other events. His relationship with the Karenni is inspired and guided by accompaniment. The chapter discusses the potential and limitations of framing research and community engagement using this concept and underscores the value of engaging with communities beyond a single research event or exploration of social problems in the short term. It also highlights the potential of this approach to lead to knowledge and insights that are otherwise difficult to attain and its use by a community whose members are actively involved partners in the co-creation of knowledge that benefits the community members as well as the researchers.
