ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors examine accompaniment as a commitment to be on a journey together in the context of their research with system-impacted and Indigenous communities. They discuss how their work embraces accompaniment through the practices of “being open” and “actively listening” while also addressing the limitations of accompaniment in research settings that are inscribed within structures of racial capitalism and coloniality. Taking a cue from Indigenous research ethics, they explore the possibility of negotiating these limitations through a commitment to reciprocity and relationality.
