ABSTRACT

As stated in our original 2010 text, conservators have worked within a changing world since the pioneers in textile conservation established the profession. Today a number of other social, political and cultural shifts are influencing the working environment of the conservator. The case study by Hughes looks back to a time when museum management was making aggressive changes that affected every employee and project output. On a positive note, the years since 2010 have seen tremendous growth in our field. The case study by McLeod and Ripley provides an example of the growing diversity of museum displays which better reflect our society. Conservators’ roles and responsibilities have continued to evolve. Three case studies by Kite; Flecker, Hackett and Haldane; and Marko and Golbourn discuss some of the wide-ranging work done by textile conservators. The case study by Sutcliffe documents the experiences of a textile conservator starting and growing a private business.
