ABSTRACT

In 2020 The Landi Company undertook the conservation of a large flat-weave Aubusson rug, measuring 3.66 metres wide × 6.60 metres long. As is common with Aubusson rugs of a certain style, the warps run across the width rather than along the length, presenting the team with a challenge both in terms of its size and construction and the extent of damage. A novel treatment approach was required, given that the combination of warp direction and size meant it could not be worked on with The Landi Company’s standard equipment. Discussion with conservators experienced with handling this type of object ensued, and ultimately a simple yet highly effective solution was found. A custom-built frame was created, using existing studio equipment, to allow the rug to be tensioned across the warps. It was given a full support of new fabric, using a combination of running stitch grid lines, brick couching and laid couching, to add strength and reinstate the design. Following consolidation, the rug was considered strong enough for washing with deionized water.
