ABSTRACT

Textile conservators are often highly involved with preventive conservation including, and beyond, textile collections. Preventive conservation includes tasks such as risk management, environmental monitoring and mitigation, pest management, storage and display design, basic cleaning, event protection, disaster preparedness and recovery. The case study by Silence discusses big-picture issues that affect all collections in a large institution. The case study by Rendell focuses on the preventive needs of textiles and the importance of in-house record keeping. The case study by Meneses Lozano details how preventive conservation considerations informed a series of innovative display mounts. Since textiles are made of many different fibres, modern materials and plastics, there is not a simple set of parameters that is appropriate for all textiles. The case studies by Howard and Sato detail the care of textiles made from different types of modern materials.
