ABSTRACT

The lighting system for the exhibition of textiles with a white ground fabric and white ornamentation is challenging. This case study presents a series of systems developed and used at the Museo Textil de Oaxaca, in Mexico, between 2011 and 2022. The aim of these systems has been to highlight motifs and textures of white-on-white cotton textiles. Three backlit lighting systems are explained: light boxes with LED lamps, three-dimensional shapes with inner lighting, and light boxes with LED strips. The reasoning behind the decision-making process to implement such systems is also discussed in order to provide a better understanding of the ethical guidelines that have directed these proposals.
