ABSTRACT

This text presents an analysis of the field of Trans Studies through the lens of Gibbons et al.’s Mode 2 Knowledge Production (“Mode 2”)—a poststructuralist framework of scientific research that classifies the shift in academia over the past half century. As Trans Studies is an emergent field of interventionist and collaborative research that advocates self-auditing, it appears at first sight to epitomise Mode 2. However, I argue that this field—while undoubtedly successful in many ways—falls short of this paradigm, specifically regarding the accountability essential to Mode 2 Knowledge Production.
