ABSTRACT

France Rose Hartline writes of the challenges that the concept of “Mode 2 Knowledge Production” sets for Trans Studies. In my response, I share hartline’s interests, but I problematise the setting of the discussion through the notion of “knowledge production”. I see the notion of Mode1/Mode 2 as problematic, and I suggest a different articulation of the ideal for Gender Studies: I see it as an interventionist field that goes beyond the idea of “production”. I also problematise the division into researchers and activists. As Gender Studies academics we express and articulate wrongs we encounter, which I also see France Rose Hartline do.
