ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how popular social media site, TikTok, is playing host to a wave of parody memes by women, mocking the misogynist discourse of so-called ‘alpha male’ podcasters. Drawing upon Foucauldian concepts of power, these memes interrupt and ridicule the legitimacy of alpha podcasters, such as Andrew Tate and Fresh & Fit. Utilising language, humour, and laughter not only to oppose dominant discourse, TikTok memes build unity between women online. Although they may not explicitly identify as feminists, the use of social media demonstrates a contemporary spin on feminist activism.
