ABSTRACT

Region has a multitude of definitions depending on the situation. Regionalism, however, is a more specific articulation. In the American South, regionalism is manifest in the sense of pride for the culture that has been cultivated across generations as separate from the rest of the United States. The Southern Porch is one of the defining artifacts of the South. The porch is a place of gathering, but also a place of privacy. It is a place of activity and a place of observation. The porch defines both the entrance and exit. The Infinity Porch defines the entrance of the South. This artifact reimagines it as a border that welcomes both those who are coming and bringing out those who are local from within. The rendering imagines the Infinity Porch becoming a gathering site between the deeply divided Northern and Southern cultures of the United States. It acts as coming together and sharing of a culture as not just the regions of North and South, but the regional culture of the United States (Figure 18.1).
