ABSTRACT

In this introductory chapter, the editors provide readers with an overview of the concept, pedagogy of teacher education. They highlight its place in the research base over the past few decades, provide an overview of its theoretical/conceptual constructs, and review the practices associated with a pedagogy of teacher education. Teacher educators can be seen as a second order of teaching practitioners, meaning those who serve as “teachers of teachers operating in teacher education and the different pedagogic settings and practices it offers.” The editors offer a third order of teaching practitioners, those who teach the teachers of teachers. They argue that the teaching and learning of the teacher educators of teacher educators requires special emphasis in developing understanding of teacher educator professional and pedagogical development. They conclude by providing an overview of the chapter contributions to this proposed book.
