ABSTRACT

In India, there is rapid urbanization, and it is estimated that half of India’s population will be in urban areas by 2030. With the surge in population, India is categorizing tier 1 cities, tier 2 cities, etc. There are cities with 30 million population, 20 million population, 10 million, 5 million, in that order. With this, there is tremendous pressure on both physical and social infrastructure, living standards, pollution, etc. Within these constraints, developing a smart city is a huge challenge. In this scenario, Indore in Central India is an exception. This has been declared the cleanest city in India for the sixth consecutive year and is being developed as a model smart city. It is imperative to write a case study on its efficiency, carbon neutrality, and business development. This case study compares it with other smart cities and brings out its uniqueness. This chapter reflects on this topic.
