ABSTRACT

This chapter explores and advocates for the productive potentials of intercultural collaboration for sustainable design, drawing from the authors research and book, Intercultural Collaboration by Design, published in 2020. As an innovative approach to COIL, Emans and Murdoch-Kitt utilize visual thinking and collaborative design methods within intercultural learning environments. The authors make a case for teaching design students to collaborate on sustainability topics across cultures. Their study reveals that international collaboration on global challenges positively affects student engagement in these topics. The experience brings different perspectives together for more creative problem-solving, helps students compare how various topics manifest in different parts of the world and enables them to acknowledge and care about the global scale of pervasive challenges beyond their own neighborhoods.
