ABSTRACT

This chapter presents and discusses the findings of a survey of 1,243 music education providers including music schools, orchestras, wind bands, choirs, and self-employed music teachers. The survey was part of a Swiss research project conducted by Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts on the initiative of the Association of Swiss Music Schools. The authors focus on collaborations between music schools and other music education providers, analyse the interaction of collaborations, and examine how future collaborations could be developed. Findings show a strong interconnection between the various music education providers but also demonstrate that in Switzerland, music schools are by far the most important actors in extracurricular music education. The authors argue that in consequence, music schools are the most important actors for collaboration in extracurricular music education and conclude that due to their nationwide presence, their institutional size, and their high degree of professionalisation, music schools have a particular responsibility to develop music education for the future and to ensure access to music education for all.
