ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses how alliances can be a key element of the policies aimed at the extension of artistic practice, and the role music schools can have in them. The author argues that the task of music schools needs to be seen beyond educating those students who happen to enrol in the school spontaneously, and beyond assuming the societal responsibility for increasing the number of people who practise the arts. Instead, music schools should aspire to reach all social strata, especially previously excluded groups. Aiming for universality and equality in the arts education and practice means that music school populations need to become true reflections of their local communities and expand their practices beyond the vertical model which is oriented towards educating future professionals. The author suggests that alliances and collaborations between music schools, the education system, and cultural institutions for extending the practice of arts can offer a wide range of paths to the participants and encourage them to continue beyond a first contact.
