ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author calls for music schools to develop a culture that reflects the interdependence of the artistic and social dimensions of music-making by bringing artistic and social purpose into creative dialogue. Within such an interconnected culture, collaborating, co-creating, co-curating, co-producing, and co-mentoring are the norm. Inevitably this has implications for leadership, which ideally has to become more inclusive, whereby staff and students both within and between institutions feel that they have a stake in the future – that they are working together with a common purpose, towards a world committed to collaboration, creativity and enterprise. The author argues that because of the enormous changes currently confronting society, it is imperative that music institutions value and listen to the voices of young people, and he lets some of them speak out in his chapter. At the heart of his vision lies a deep commitment to different forms of social engagement within a culture of creative collaborative practice.
