ABSTRACT

This chapter presents Ethno, the Jeunesses Musicales International's network of international music camps that enable young people to meet and explore traditional, folk, and world music through informal pedagogical approaches such as learning by ear and peer to peer in collaboration with others. Through these collaborations, Ethno gatherings have succeeded in building bridges between formal and informal music learning practices by inviting young people and teachers from local music schools to encounter various musical cultures as audiences while also discovering the Ethno pedagogical approach. The author examines this hybrid space between informal and formal music learning and illustrates its effects on music school teachers and their professional development and on young peoples’ musical paths. Furthermore, the chapter shows that by enabling collaborations and connections across the formal and non-formal music education continuum, Ethno also affects and expands the cultural horizons of local communities.
