ABSTRACT

Student mobility programs are believed to empower students’ intercultural awareness since they have the opportunity to meet different cultures in international settings. Nevertheless, some studies show that students’ mobility experiences may not always end up with intercultural understanding, or they can have temporary intercultural awareness that can easily fade away when they return to their home countries. Alternatively, they may even strengthen their stereotypes towards other students from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. To this end, there is a need to support academic staff who teach in international higher education settings. They need to become aware of students’ different identities to encourage diversity. Therefore, a theoretical framework, Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy, is taken as a guide throughout this chapter, and practical suggestions are provided to lead the academic staff.
