ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the attitudes of Erasmus exchange students towards learning the local language and culture during their Erasmus+ mobility program. The participants are thirty-four students attending exchange programs from a Turkish university. For this chapter we included the participants’ OLS exam results in local languages and semi-structured interviews. The interviews focused explicitly on (a) students’ attitudes towards the target culture and language, (b) opportunities for learning the local language, and (c) the impact of the dominance of English on the learning of local languages. Thematic analysis revealed that exchange students had different attitudes and practices in various countries.
