ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies possible threats to media freedom, and proposes possible solutions to such threats. The term "state capture" has dominated South Africa's political landscape in recent years, with the media playing an extremely significant role in exposing wrong-doings, malfeasance, corruption and maladministration, all of which have formed part of the larger narrative. Journalism worldwide is increasingly beholden to these mammoth companies and multinationals which are highly unregulated, operate without constraints and dominate the online space. The media therefore constantly have to adapt to the whims of the Facebooks and Googles of the world. The economic model used by Amabhungane is donor- and not advertising-based, focusing on the radical transparency of every donor listed on its website. In addition, Amabhungane has evidence files, which adds credibility to its reporting.
