ABSTRACT

The South African constitution states clearly that our democracy was founded on the values of human dignity, the achievement of equality and social justice, and the advancement of human rights and freedoms. The regulations imposed by lockdown covered an array of measures that were deemed necessary to prevent the spread of the virus, including limitations on the enjoyment of various rights and freedoms. The lockdown taught many to understand freedom differently, and to appreciate many of the freedoms that are usually taken for granted, such as freedom of movement. The citizens learnt that the right to individual freedoms does not supersede the right to freedom of the collective. The focus of government in the next 25 years must be to achieve economic freedom for all, and to ensure that no South African ever experiences poverty again.
