ABSTRACT

Party development in Argentina, as in Latin America, is based mainly on politically relevant social divides—or cleavages—that emerge from the tensions of the oligarchic pact, the irruption of the masses in politics, the struggle between authoritarianism and democracy, or the pro-State or pro-market orientations. The right-wing political parties that took action between 1983 and 2022 responded to each of the party families that produced those cleavages throughout the twentieth century. Thus, this chapter will delve into the right-wing parties that were relevant between 1983 and 2022, paying special attention to their genesis; electoral development; social and leadership make-up and their belonging to the various traditions of right-wing political party families.
