ABSTRACT

Emergence involves the creation of something new that could not be expected from a description of the parts prior to its creation. The authors believe systems psychodynamics does involve the creation of a new way of understanding organisations and the task of organisational consultancy. In philosophy, systems theory, science and art, emergence occurs when an entity is observed to have properties its parts do not have on their own, properties or behaviours, which emerge only when the parts interact in a wider whole. The authors believe that systems psychodynamics as a transdisciplinary and multidisciplinary discipline exhibits properties that its constituent parts do not have separately. Systems psychodynamics can be situated within the broad field of organisational development. Although behavioural science has provided the basic foundation for the study and practice of organisation development, new and emerging fields of study have made their presence felt.
