ABSTRACT

Mobile money (MM) has become a powerful means of achieving financial inclusion (FI) and sustainable development, especially in Africa. MM transactions, which have been regarded as a tool for FI through serving the underserved and unbanked population, are equally in the lead in Covid-19 prevention. The call for adherence to Covid-19 protocols such as social distancing and mobility restrictions have become a substantive motivating factor for the adoption of MM services. The past two decades have seen the rapid growth of MM in developing economies. At the same time, FI has topped most of the developmental agendas. MM has proved to be an enabler of FI in many economies, however, some have failed to fully utilise the sector. This chapter explores the challenges of implementing MM services and the barriers to the adoption of MM in Botswana. It is envisaged that this study will show policymakers how to enhance MM to improve FI, prevent the spread of Covid-19 and ultimately achieve sustainable development.
