ABSTRACT

The political story of France's membership of the EEC/EU is one of evolving and mixed feelings. Over time and depending on the political movements, they have been fluctuating between commitment to the European integration process and hostility. Legally speaking, the French constitutional system has demonstrated its capacity to integrate EU law into national law. It has in particular found the resources, by and large, to abide by the EU law primacy and effectiveness requirements while maintaining the supremacy of the Constitution within the domestic legal order. In recent times, however, French courts have issued some decisions expressing resistance to EU law solutions.
