ABSTRACT

Denmark is generally viewed as belonging to the outer circles of the EU integration mainly due to the opt-outs negotiated after the failed Maastricht referendum in 1992. This chapter discusses the historical legal evolution towards more EU integration building on the latest referendum in June 2022 about the abolishment of the defence and security opt-out in Denmark. Many explanations can be highlighted: the invasion of Ukraine and a more united NATO engagement, but it might also symbolise a new dawn for the Danish support of the EU integration.
