ABSTRACT

The objective of this research was to describe the leadership style applied by a lead coordinator of research functions in a consortium of private universities in Mexico to manage intellectual capital. The methodology used had a mixed approach of exploratory scope with case study application; the sampling was non-probabilistic by convenience. The instruments used were a questionnaire and an interview script administered to researchers located at the different campuses of the consortium. The results found that according to the path–goal leadership theory, the leadership style applied is instrumental at the beginning but is subsequently maintained in a balance between the three (instrumental, supportive, and participative). This exercise could facilitate the implementation of formal management processes to develop intellectual capital from the leader’s perspective and identify areas in which the knowledge process can be made more efficient.
