ABSTRACT

Since early 2020, the use of computers and educational technology by both teachers and students alike has increased exponentially. This has brought about many pros and cons with students showing improved signs of digital literacy and teachers showing digital pedagogy that can incorporate more productive and interactive style online classes. Obviously, as teachers we can’t know/determine if this increase in screen time is constructive or not, but what we can do is to promote the productive use of appropriate tech tools that can aid in the process of learning and help future students to effectively make the switch from a knowledge-based society to competency-based one. In Japan, particularly, developing self-regulated learning (SRL) skills is a major objective in the new national curriculum for primary and secondary schools. Research in education suggests the practice of formative assessment (FA) in the classroom fosters SRL skills. In effect, we can teach our students how to learn and gain educational independence with 21st-century learning skills that intend to cater to Industry 4.0 or the rapid digitalisation of things. This chapter will discuss ways in which SRL skills can be developed using technology that utilises FA through ICT under the framework of Lesson Study pedagogical techniques, to make for an improved learning experience for our students.
