ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a panoramic view on the evolution of tourism in Euskal Herria, focusing on the current initiatives of building a sustainable model which connects natural patrimony, cultural heritage and folklore. The popularisation of Basque mythology and the interest towards the history of witchcraft have opened doorways to revisit the ancient animistic cosmovision and observe the legendary sites with a renovated look, showing greater respect in the interactions with the environment. Considering climate change in course, the preservation of the ecosystems and the protection of water sources have become priority themes in the communitarian networks and government administration. Nonetheless, the cooperation of the visitors is essential and requires a new approach to engage in ethical proposals, offering an integrated contextualisation which allows them to attribute deeper significance to their experiences and create harmonious relationships.
