ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the transition, experiences, challenges and opportunities faced by an educator coming from Malaysia to the United Kingdom. Using the Malaysian education system as the basis of the discussion, the chapter begins by reflecting into the author’s teaching experience in different educational contexts in Malaysia. The chapter continues by digging into the author’s experience as she enters the new world of working in an unfamiliar workplace. An insider-outsider perspective is offered in understanding the personal-professional boundaries in a UK university. As the author further explores her new experience, she reflects on the importance and the process of creating a positive relationship in a classroom. The exploration is followed by understanding the nature of academic skills courses offered both in Malaysia and in the United Kingdom, and how this nature presents opportunities and challenges in teaching in both countries. Reflecting on all these experiences, the author focuses on how to move forward while embracing the intercultural elements of her teaching experience.
