ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on small and rural schools’ learning environments with particular attention to the theme of the relationship between school and community, the latter perceived in terms of an extended classroom. The environment outside the school building is conceptualised as part of the curriculum and in dialogue with it in such a way as to nourish thought and critical judgement and help them to flourish. As an example of a new grammar for the future of education, the chapter presents some of the areas in which an innovative model of schooling organisation is being piloted.
